Memory triage for gaming processes
Plan memory collection and interpret process-scanning leads with reproducible acquisition context.
Question & scope
Memory may preserve process state, loaded material, strings, and runtime context absent from disk. Decide whether collection is appropriate before asking a player to run an acquisition tool. Record its provenance, version, required access, output location, and impact. A live acquisition is a changing-system operation, not an invisible snapshot with no effect.
Separate acquisition from analysis. Preserve the image and calculate a content hash. Record the machine, Windows build, collection start and end times, and errors. Analyze a copy in a controlled environment; do not execute material found within it.
What to collect
| Source | Retain and examine |
|---|---|
| Memory source | Image, content hash, method, and collection times. |
| System context | Windows build, machine identity, available symbols, and acquisition limits. |
| Process observations | Parser-supported identity, tree, command-line, or scanning results. |
| Corroboration | Relevant files, logs, modules, and session context. |
Examination workflow
- Define the process or capability question and select a compatible acquisition method.
- Preserve output and errors; do not substitute a process dump for complete RAM without stating the difference.
- Use a documented framework such as Volatility 3 with suitable symbols and record commands and version.
- Compare process enumeration with scanning results where appropriate, investigating differences rather than assuming every object is active.
- Treat suspicious regions or strings as leads requiring process, mapping, file, or behavioral corroboration.
Interpretation & false positives
Enumeration and pool scanning can answer different questions. Scans can encounter residual objects; a difference from a live list does not itself prove a hidden active process. Symbol mismatches, acquisition gaps, and operating-system support affect results.
Unusual or executable regions are not automatically cheat evidence. JIT runtimes, security products, graphics components, and legitimate hooks can create complex layouts. A string may be cached text rather than an executed capability. Retain its offset and process context, and describe interpretation limits.
Worked scenario
A scan contains a process name absent from the live list. Check whether its lifetime overlaps the session and whether the object is residual. Compare creation or exit context and other artifacts. Report a historical or unresolved object unless evidence supports current activity.
Report checklist
- Acquisition type, hash, and timing are recorded.
- Framework and symbol support are documented.
- Residual objects are distinguished from active processes.
- Strings or region flags are not complete capability proof.
